To reduce the transmission of germs, commonly touched surfaces and objects should be cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis (e.g., at least once a day). When the facilities are experiencing an epidemic, cleaning and disinfection of these surfaces and items is required more often. Using this checklist as a reference, create a checklist appropriate to your facility. Always remember to work from clean to unclean areas. Please refer to the household bleach solution table for instructions on how to prepare bleach solutions for sanitizing or disinfection of specific surfaces and objects.

General places:
  • Doorknobs/frames/handles/other commonly touched door parts

  • Children's lockers/cubby holes/storage bins

  • Tables/desks/chairs/counter tops

  • Railings for the hands

  • Light switches

  • Water fountains

  • Buttons on elevators

  • Equipment that is shared (such as toys, sports equipment and musical instruments after each use, computer keyboards and mice, etc.)

  • Telephones/faxes/photocopiers/intercoms

  • Toy storage and play zones

  • Surfaces (especially where children play on them)

Staff room/kitchen:
  • Equipment and spaces for food preparation

  • Tops of the counter

  • Handles on refrigerators

  • Microwaves

  • Kettles and coffee pots

  • Tables/chairs

Washrooms for children and staff:
  • Stall door edges and locks

  • Hooks for coats

  • Sanitary napkin dispensers

  • Paper towel dispensers

  • Soap dispensers

  • Taps/faucets

  • Flush handles

  • Seats for toilets

  • Urinals and toilet bowls

Remember the following points:
  • To clean sinks and toilets/urinals, use single-use cloths or disposable paper towels.

  • Maintain a sufficient supply of paper towels and soap.

  • Do not restock partially empty dispensers; once empty, containers should be cleaned, sanitized, and dried before being refilled.

  • Prior to disinfection, soap/detergent must be washed away.

  • Follow the instructions given. It may be tempting to combine cleaning products to ensure that your facility is germ-free, but don't. Some cleansers and disinfectants, such as chlorine bleach and ammonia, can be hazardous, even fatal, when mixed. Others can irritate your eyes, nose, or throat, causing breathing difficulties.

Disinfection is a crucial task, as it prevents the spread of infection and diseases. It is important to hire professional companies that offer disinfection services for your cleaning needs. Some of the benefits of hiring a disinfection company include: cost-effective and time-saving, which will allow you to focus on your core competencies and keep your business running smoothly. Also, you can be assured that they will do their job professionally by using certified equipment and solutions.
